Ignoring a chat will mute message notifications from the contact, and the person will remain uninformed that the conversation has been ignored and sent to Spam.
This option is a step above muting and archiving-it places a chat with a person or group in the Spam folder called 'Message Requests.' This is where messages from people outside a user's immediate network go-and is an excellent go-to when the occasional Facebook Messenger outage is not an available excuse for not replying to annoying contacts. The 'Ignore' feature is a reliable method for taking a visual break from someone on the app. A time limit for the muting can also be set. To mute a Messenger conversation, long-press on a thread, then tap 'Mute.' Choose to mute message notifications, call notifications or both. Muting a chat thread lets a person hit pause on conversations in the app without removing a conversation from the inbox or marking it as read. If a user has various active group chat threads on Messenger, the notifications can go haywire. To do this, long-press on a person's chat thread in the Messenger inbox, then tap 'Archive.' To retrieve archived messages, tap on the Profile icon on the upper-left corner of the page, then tap 'Archived chats.' Tapping on a contact's thread and sending them a message will push the thread back into the main inbox, where they will again be able to message and video chat through Messenger. This option doesn't remove a person as a contact, but it does move an ongoing message thread with them out of the inbox and into an 'Archived chats' folder that can be accessed later on.
